Kirtana Krishnan is a long time friend, musician, artist, and an immensely talented person in general. I met Kirtana in my 1st year of junior college at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.


After graduating college, Kirtana went on to start her own, successful business. She started painting custom designs and artwork on canvas shoes and then moved on to painting guitars, walls, and just about any interesting surface she could find.


I had the opportunity in my last few months in Mumbai to catch up with her and photograph some of the work she had been doing at that time. The logo for her brand 'Shoeriken Custom Shoes' is designed by Chitrang Panchal, another very talented person, and a very good friend of 6 years.

CANON PIXMA SOUND SCULPTURES: BRINGING COLOUR TO LIFE

The Canon Pixma is a range of printers from Canon which guarantee photolab-quality printing. The printers use a seperate grey ink to get stunning prints in both greyscale and colour. Other features of the Pixma range include Full HD Movie Print allowing you to print stills and photographs directly from your HD movies, an improved Wi-Fi interface, and an improved Creative Park Premium which is Canon's online service for downloading calendars, greetings cards, models and 3D paper art.

The ad in particular uses sound waves generated by small speakers to launch drops of paint into the air, thereby creating beautiful and stunning patterns. The concept for the ad is brilliant, giving new meaning to the phrase 'bringing colour to life' and generating interest in printing in an age where most photo sharing is done online through the internet.

THREE'S COMPANY

This is an image I took at a fashion show in Mumbai, India. I love this image because of the hair of the models, they way they are positioned within the frame and the subtle green light that is hitting the audience members in the foreground.

Ok now that I have my own lighting kit complete with 2 strobes and stands and what not, I figured I should go ahead and contribute to the ever growing Strobist community.

You maybe seeing a lot more of Morpheus in the coming days. This is the best toy I could find to photograph and I make a sucky model myself. Poor Morpheus, though, he did his best to protest but I got the better of him.

MY HANDS SEE WHAT MY EYES CANNOT

When I visited the leper colony in Dahisar, little did I expect to meet such a diverse group of people.

I happened to meet this woman by chance when I was passing by her tiny hut. I heard her television blaring and couldn't help but knock on her non-existent door.

She was cooking at the time and what shocked me the most was the fact that this woman is completely blind. She was treated for Leprosy which has caused her fingers to get disfigured.

Even though she cannot see, she manages to cook, clean and do all the household chores and uses the television to keep her company.

I have not cropped out anything on purpose and this image is pretty much SOOC except for some white balance adjustment and contrast correction. I felt I had to do justice to this woman by showing everything I can that forms a part of her life. Her house is everything you see in the image.

NO PAIN CAN GET ME DOWN

No pain can get me down, originally uploaded by photoholic_royd.

Images of slums are usually associated with hunger, poverty, sadness and the likes. But I encountered a different emotion when I visited the slums along the Dahisar River in Mumbai, India. An emotion of courage, and an emotion of happiness. This woman looked so beautiful when I saw her, I couldn't stop myself from making a picture of her.

She suffers from Kyphosis or what is commonly known as a hunchback. But that doesn't stop her from enjoying life and the company of her very beautiful little daughters. My salute to people like her who may have a small wallet, but have enormous hearts.

While shooting the documentary, we met a woman named Chapi, who is a Warli painter.

While she painted the village school for us, she told us about her life, her children and grand children, her village, and about Warli painting. It was very touching to spend time with Chapi and to learn about a different art form.

OVER THE FIELDS

This image was taken at Vavepada which is a tiny village off the town on Palghar.

I had been shooting with my 50mm f/1.4 AiS lens before this so I had my camera on manual mode. I changed to the kit lens and saw this kid at the window. I completely forgot about adjusting exposure and just made this image. I'm happy with the way it turned out though.

A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY

I called Reshma to do the narration for the documentary I am working on. After a long day of work we finally decided to take a few pictures and unwind. This was taken on the spur of the moment.

I have also started working more with RAW files and practicing my NEF editing techniques. So far, I am finding RAW files to be really helpful. Although my PP skills aren't at a level where I can squeeze the best detail out of an image, having the ability to control how a picture turns out is worth it.

NEW CAMERA: NIKON D90

I recently bought myself a Nikon D90 with an 18 - 105 DX VR ED lens. I am thoroughly enjoying shooting with it and it's a great first DSLR.

Since I own an FM10 with 3 lenses, it made sense for me to buy a Nikon so I could use my old lenses. My favourite of them is the 50mm f/1.4. The optical quality is simply unbelievable. There is no point in me writing an entire review of the camera (there are hundreds of them online anyway). However, I have to say that I'm glad i bought this camera. It makes very high quality images and feels just right in my hands.
